Sadly the creators of the Lua powered Corona game engine, Corona Labs, have decided to call it quits.
They have moved away from paid plans. You used to have to pay hundreds of euros a year for each version of your game (IOS, Android, PC, etc.).
The economics of funding game engine development simply no longer made sense. Instead of simply shutting down, though, they have open-sourced the game engine (more than it was) and have switched to the much more permissive MIT license.
That is a win-win situation for the users.
A few keys aspects of Corona:
- Corona is a complete framework
- Corona is cross-platform
- Development is in Lua
- Compatible with Windows and macOS
Now that Corona is open-source and therefore free, it can be an exciting choice compared to the more premium competitors such as Unity.
Here is a tutorial made by Corona Labs on how to build your first game.
